The King

Below is an excerpt of his initial conversation between Elvis and Sam Phillips’ assistant, Marion Keisker:

“What kind of singer are you?” He responded instantly, “I sing all kinds.” “Who do you sound like?” she persisted. “I don’t sound like nobody,” was his response.

After his demo, she made herself a note: “Good ballad singer, Hold.”

The City of Memphis got a federal grant Tuesday that will help improve the area around Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion in Whitehaven, one of the city’s top tourist destinations.

More than a million dollars will be used to beautify the Elvis Presley Boulevard Corridor from Shelby Drive to Interstate 55. The funds come from a $975,312 federal grant with a local match of $243,828.

And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?

May 31, 2009

Acts 2: 1-11

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs– in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.”

How communism works

May 30, 2009

communism

The Five-Year Plans for the National Economy of the USSR (Russian: пятилетка, Pyatiletka) were a series of nation-wide centralized exercises in rapid economic development in the Soviet Union. The plans were developed by the Gosplan based on the Theory of Productive Forces that was part of the general guidelines of the Communist Partyfor economic development. Fulfilling the plan became the watchword of Soviet bureaucracy. (See Overview of the Soviet economic planning process) The same method of planning was also adopted by most other communist states, including the People’s Republic of China, and India‘s pro-Soviet government in the 1950–60s. In addition, severalcapitalist states have emulated the concept of central planning, though in the context of a market economy, by setting integrated economic goals for a finite period of time. Thus are found “Seven-year Plans” and “Twelve-Year Plans”.

when the hired man sees the wolf coming, he leaves the sheep and runs away

May 3, 2009

11 ”I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. 12 The hired man is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when the hired man sees the wolf coming, he leaves the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired man. He does not care about the sheep.

14 ”I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and my sheep know me. 15 They know me just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I give my life for the sheep.

16 ”I have other sheep that do not belong to this sheep pen. I must bring them in too. They also will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock and one shepherd.

17 ”The reason my Father loves me is that I give up my life. But I will take it back again. 18 No one takes it from me. I give it up myself. I have the authority to give it up. And I have the authority to take it back again. I received this command from my Father.”

fireworks1The Brightness of Our Childhood (James Watkins)

The brightness of our childhood
is not completely spent-
but stirs again in drifting dreams-
restless and intense.

Rushing upward, out beyond
the envelope of time-
fueled by futures unfulfilled-
destined and divine.

Gloried, glazing glances-
of eternity-
satisfied by inward guide-
sanctified and free.

I’m late to my own announcements, but for those who haven’t come across this elsewhere, we launched F/lthyGorgeousTh/ngs today. What started as a small project has become a significant collaborative effort, so I’m just one of several who’ve been working hard to make this thing happen.

The issues are conceived as roughly thematic wholes, with regulars updated weekly, and we’ve also set up FilthyGorgeousFix, which uses the tumblr platform for more frequently updated content, and culls from our ‘Daily Fix.’ Kasia and I are editing that site and contributing to FGT itself as regular contributors.

And then there’s something worth mentioning in particular: we’ve got a column dedicated to reader-submitted content. Love notes,  audio files, collages, videos, small-scale replica diaramas, whatever. Personally, I love handwritten notes, because I see enough typewritten content as it is. If you have something you’d like to see up there, get in touch with us. We’ll love you.”
